Please join us at the Dowse Art Museum for a guided tour of their newest exhibitions with curator Sian Van Dyk and Director, Karl Chitham.
Bringing together everything from bronze and ceramics to duct tape and wool, Breaking The Bronze Ceiling reflects on the relationship between women and sculptural practice with artworks from The Dowse Collection, and breaks through the assumption that sculpture is a predominantly masculine domain. In keeping with The Dowse’s unique history the exhibition assesses the materials woman have used, the themes they have explored, and examines how these elements show a cross-over between fine art and craft practices. Artists represented in the show include Andrea Gardner, Ann Verdcourt, Kate Newby, Lisa Walker, Niki Hastings-McFall, Shona Rapira-Davies and Tanya Ashken.
Te Puāwai is a compelling and unmissable exhibition of new work by leading contemporary artist Shane Cotton (Ngāti Rangi, Ngāti Hine, Te Uri Taniwha) – the first public show in the place he was raised, Te Awakairangi Hutt Valley. In a suite of brand new works, Cotton brings together Upoko tuhituhi (head markings), mania, native birds and sailing ships to animate questions about history, culture and identity that reverberate from Aotearoa’s pre-human past right to the present.
After the guided talk concludes you will be able to explore the other current shows Claudia Kogachi: There’s No I In Team, and The Most Dedicated: An Aotearoa Graffiti Story before relaxing in one of the cafes nearby.
