Explore the contributions the Friends of Te Papa have made to the museums art collection over the years including paintings, jewelry and sculptures with Curators Rebecca Rice and Justine Olsen on this hour long tour.
From paintings by New Zealand’s beloved modernists, Frances Hodgkins, Toss Woolaston and Colin McCahon, to modernist gems by Rata Lovell-Smith and Raymond McIntyre; from lithographs by Māori and Pacific Island artists, to epic painted outpourings of emotional angst by Phillip Clairmont. The contributions of Te Papa’s Friends have enriched our art collection in unexpected ways. But which painting did they gift that earned the status of public favourite in 2018? Rebecca Rice, Curator Historical New Zealand Art, will share all with us behind the scenes.
We’ll then join Justine Olsen, Curator of Decorative art and design, as she guides us through treasures of the jewelry and ceramic collection acquired by The Friends of Te Papa. The seminal Bone Stone Shell collection acquired in 1993 helped to lay the foundations of future collecting of contemporary jewelry; the recent acquisition Picador Jug by Picasso and Madoura pottery highlights the way such an extraordinary artist expanded his practice to embrace art and design. Justine will discuss how these acquisitions underpin our collecting policies and help to enhance the national collection.
