Go behind the scenes with Katie Cooper (Curator NZ Histories and Cultures) and Carolyn McGill (Kaitiaki Taonga Collection Manager Humanities) to see some of the highlights of Te Papa’s furniture and technology collections.
From a magnificent nineteenth-century kauri sideboard hand-carved with fruits and game, to a New Zealand-made TV epitomizing 1970s style, the collections include familiar mass-produced objects and one-of-a-kind works of supreme craftsmanship. This tour will give an insight into some of the objects and will show how Te Papa takes care of them.
Katie Cooper, Curator NZ Histories and Cultures, will be leading the tour. Katie’s research interest is the material culture of domestic life, focusing in particular on nineteenth-century New Zealand. She is also engaged in ongoing research into the social and cultural history of rural New Zealand.
Carolyn McGill, Kaitiaki Taonga Collection Manager Humanities, manages the storeroom. Her role covers storing collection items appropriately, providing access to the collections, transporting them to wherever they’re needed and making sure information about them is recorded correctly.
