Our Reading Group takes place on the third and fourth Thursday of the month. Thursday 24 April:
Whiti: Colossal Squid of the Deep – By Victoria Cleal, illustrated by Isobel Joy Te Aho-White.
Especially for the school holidays, we will be joined by author Victoria Cleal and squid expert and tracker Thom Linley – who has just arrived home from a Colossal Squid seeking expedition. We’ll also be joined by Kat Bolstad, who dissected a Giant Squid in Te Papa’s research facility, and is happy to participate in the Q & A to share her knowledge on the project and squid!
A wonderful 32-page illustrated book that dives into the mysterious world of the colossal squid. Through engaging text and glorious images, it tells the story of a colossal squid’s life, from
hatching out of a tiny egg to escaping the jaws of a sperm whale and becoming the world’s biggest invertebrate. Side topics range from Te Papa’s colossal squid specimen to Māori exploration of the sub Antarctic. Readers will discover how the squid survives in the deep waters of Antarctica, and will meet other strange creatures that are uniquely adapted to this hostile environment.
Copies of the books will be for sale at the Reading Group, with a generous discount available to attendees on the day.
Free entry. Koha will be collected at the meeting. All proceeds go towards the purchase of acid free envelopes for document storage.
Please register for this group by booking your free ticket. We will meet by the blue couches by the display of the Treaty of Waitangi on level 4 at 1.50pm.
