President’s Column: August 2023

Hello everyone,

My name is Richard Dean and, following the AGM held on July 27th, I have assumed the role of President of the Friends of Te Papa, following in the footsteps of Koenraad Kuiper who has served so well in that position over the last 3 years.

At the AGM we also confirmed the appointment of a strong committee working with me for the coming year, comprising Mazz Scannell (Vice President), Tim Steel (Treasurer), Nicola Kirkup (Secretary), returning committee members Joji Jacob, Koenraad Kuiper, Richard Norman and Ann Walker, and new members Faith Atkins, Rosalene Fogel, Dan Laufer, and Colleen Restieaux.

Our guest speaker preceding the AGM was Lisa Tipping, Chief Finance and Operations Officer at Te Papa. Lisa delivered us a very interesting, relevant and thought-provoking address, providing excellent context for the work of the Friends in working closely with, and for the betterment of, Te Papa in increasing public awareness, appreciation and usage of the magnificent treasure that Te Papa is to the people of New Zealand.

By giving the Friends an increased understanding of the short and medium-term plans Te Papa has for its projects, buildings, displays, research, and people, and highlighting the importance of Te Papa and its work in the delivery of New Zealand culture and heritage to the world at large, Lisa’s presentation was an inspiration and encouragement to the Friends to continue to deliver value to Te Papa through our efforts.

We on the new committee look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the next year to further develop relationships and activities which will contribute to the continuing achievement of the objectives of the Friends and the ongoing success of Te Papa.

Richard Dean,
President.
